Pets often show illness or anxiety through improper or changed behavior. Let our staff help you determine what is appropriate behavior for your pet and what you can do to change that inappropriate behavior for the better. The Pet Medical Center of Edmond Oklahoma has doctors and staff with the skills, experience and education to offer you counseling that can help influence your pet’s behavior.
We are often presented with pets experiencing behavioral problems including separation anxiety, storm phobias, obsessive/compulsive activity, urine marking/house soiling, senility (cognitive dysfunction) and aggression. Sometimes these problems are secondary to an underlying disease process (urinary tract infection, hormonal imbalances, etc…), so a complete physical exam and diagnostic workup should be the first order of business in addressing one of these problems.
There is not a cure-all for addressing any and all behavioral problems, but if underlying disease is ruled out, then we can often see marked improvement in the behavioral issue through a combination of training, medication, and/or diet.
Separation anxiety and storm phobias are very frequent complaints on the part of our pet owners—-did you know that these conditions can be improved very consistently by use of a common, safe and inexpensive human medicine called fluoxetine? You probably know this drug by one of its retail names—Prozac. We have successfully improved the quality of life of countless dogs and cats (and their owners) by prudent use of this medicine.
If you have any questions about managing or treating a suspected behavioral issue in your pet, then please call to schedule a counseling/consultation session.
